BIO

Meet Thin Mint—aka Granny Thin Mint—the absolute sweetest senior dog looking for her forever human to snuggle with. This total heart-melter was somehow left to live out her golden years alone at the North Central Animal Shelter here in Los Angeles. Thankfully, the wonderful people at A Purposeful Rescue saw her and said HECK NO, HONEY— you’re coming with us!!! The very day she was pulled from the shelter and dubbed Thin Mint, I was gong through the last step of becoming an approved foster for the rescue. A senior dog. Likely blind. Named after my favorite Girl Scout cookie. The day I get approved to foster. Um, hello? Can we say meant to be?!! As paw-parent to two very senior rescue dogs of my own, one of whom is mostly blind, mostly deaf and has cognitive dysfunction, I knew I could help this girl decompress and realize that her life was changing for the better.

I can’t believe someone abandoned this total love of a dog. Yes, she’s blind; but end of the road? Heck, no! She’s got so much love left to give, and so much life left to live. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I first took her in. Could she see anything at all, perhaps shadow movement? Had she adjusted to her sight impairment? How much guidance would she need? Would she be nervous, unsure, glued to me like velcro? I quickly discovered exactly who she is. She is little Piglet, searching for her Winnie-the-Pooh. Able to accomplish so much on her own, but so assured just knowing you exist in her world. She’s so happy upon hearing your voice—“I just wanted to be sure of you.” I was immediately impressed by her sense of hearing and general awareness of herself. Thin Mint is confident and smart, sensing out her surroundings. She’ll bump into things from time to time, especially as she learns a new place. Sometimes she forgets where things are when she first wakes up—but we bump into things together as we shake off the morning grogginess! Your voice is her pillar, her guiding light, assuring her that all is well in the world. How can that not make someone feel loved?!

I’ve fostered many dogs over the years, and have worked with them for over a decade— Thin Mint is by far the best little snuggler ever (just don’t tell my dogs I said that.) She’ll rest her head on my arm or leg as I dry her off after a bath or while I’m helping my other dogs eat their meals. Her head or body smushed up against me as I read a book or watch a movie....oh my god. It’s almost unbearable how sweet and adorable she is in those moments! This girl has clearly been through some things—on top of everything else, her teeth appear to have been filed—but she’s above holding grudges. All she wants is someone to love, and to be loved in return. The way her tail wags upon hearing your voice when seemingly dead asleep; the sweet, gentle kisses she gives; the way she stretch-out- army-crawls out of her crate to me when I come home...it’s pure goodness. I want the world to know from dogs like her that senior dogs and special needs dogs aren’t difficult, and they add SO much to your life!
