BIO
Miniature Poodle, Small Collar, Medium Harness, 12 lbs. No use of his hind legs, but as sweet and happy as can be. Leif was brought into Palm Springs Animal Shelter as a stray with no use of his hind legs. Leif struggled to pull himself around, his front leg muscles were atrophied, and he had evidence of a spinal surgery scar. Despite Leif’s condition he was bright, alert, and so very happy to greet anyone who would give him some love. Our staff and volunteers used towels as a sling to help build Leif’s front leg muscles. After scouring our donations, we tracked down a set of wheels that we hoped would give Leif the freedom we knew he was longing for. The wheels were a success and just about a perfect fit! Leif was off and zooming down the halls of our shelter and wheeled his way out into our small dog playgroup.
Success stories, even as small as a little dog cruising on some wonder wheels bring so much relief to both staff and volunteers. Once we settled Leif in, our Development and Outreach Manager decided to foster little Leif. He is now doing incredibly well living with his foster sister, senior chihuahua Lily and other house guests that come in from time to time. Leif does need his bladder expressed throughout the day because he cannot urinate on his own. But, this is a task his foster mom is more than willing to commit to. Leif is a bright light in what can be an exhausting industry. An underdog who has proved he can overcome!
